Helen had some unusual facts in her life. Between 1909 and 1921, she wrote several articles about socialism and supported Eugene Debs, a Socialist Party presidential candidate. Her series of essays on socialism, entitled "Out of the Dark," described her views on socialism and world affairs. Helen’s first book, “The story of My Life” covered her transformation from childhood to her college.
For most of her life, the press had been overwhelmingly supportive of her, praising her courage and intelligence. Helen Keller was an author, political activist, and lecturer. She also was the first deaf and blind person to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree. Helen learned to communicate in many different ways, like finger-spelling, lip-reading, reading Braille, raised type, and using a typewriter. Helen was a great fan of music. Through her highly sensitive fingers, she could "hear" the vibration of the instruments as well as the human voice. Helen was also a great dog lover which she owned dogs throughout her life.
